Description
13-8MO
PH 13-8 Mo* stainless steel is a martensitic precipitation/age-hardening stainless steel with high strength and hardness, as well as excellent levels of resistance to general corrosion and stress-corrosion cracking. Furthermore, the alloy has excellent ductility and hardness in large sections in both the longitudinal and transverse directions. Through careful control of the chemical composition and microstructure, as well as through specialised melting that decreases impurities and segregation, it is possible to achieve the exceptional qualities of PH 13-8 Mo stainless steel. The mechanical qualities of this alloy are superior to those of other ferrous-based materials when subjected to severe environmental conditions. One low temperature treatment can age-harden 13-8 Mo stainless steel, which has strong fabrication qualities and can be age-hardened in one step.
Prior to ageing, cold work has been shown to accelerate the ageing process, particularly at lower ageing temperatures. 13-8 Mo stainless steel has been used for valve parts, fittings, cold-headed and machined fasteners, shafts, landing gear parts, pins, lockwashers, aviation components, nuclear reactor components, and petrochemical applications that require resistance to stress-corrosion cracking. In general, this alloy should be considered when high strength, toughness, corrosion resistance, and resistance to stress-corrosion cracking are required in a steel with little directionality in its attributes. The alloy has proven to be very resistant to stress-corrosion cracking in a variety of experiments that mimic the circumstances seen in a marine environment, both in the wrought and welded forms.
